Zins in the Kitchen at Copia combines culinary expertise and winemaking wizardry for an afternoon of zinful exploration at Copia, where the building is one big kitchen! The event starts with a seated seminar followed by a walk‐about Tasting Reception in the airy atrium. Passed hors d’oeuvres and food stations will offer exquisite bites prepared by the talented CIA chefs in their kitchen.

Uncovering the Secrets of the Vines

Almost ten years ago, in two small plots of ground, one in Dry Creek Valley and the other in Sonoma Valley, identical Zinfandel clones were planted from the Heritage Vineyard Project. Of course it is already well established these Sonoma County grape growing regions have quite different soil types, topography and climate. What has not yet been explored is how would the same Zinfandel selections compare to each other when made into wine at the UC Davis Winery utilizing the same winemaking techniques? Now, it’s time to find out! 

Join Joel Peterson of Once & Future (Bedrock Vineyard, Sonoma Valley) and Mark Vernon of Ridge Vineyards (Lytton Springs Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley) for a truly unique and perhaps “historic” tasting. You’ll taste three different selections, six wines total, from the 2018 vintage, three from the Bedrock Vineyard and three from the Lytton Springs Vineyard. You’ll compare and contrast both the differences between the selections within the same vineyard AND compare the same selections between the two vineyard sites.

About the Heritage Vineyard Project

Background:  For the past 25 years, ZAP has worked with UC Davis to study rare and famous Zinfandel selections from around California. The Zinfandel Heritage Vineyard Project has been a fruitful collaboration with a primary goal to provide superior Zinfandel selections to growers as the basis for future plantings; and in 2009 UC Davis FPS released 19 Zinfandel selections to nurseries. As many of our ZAP members know, one of the benefits has been the wine produced from this collection, made for ZAP by different winemakers.

Since the opening of the UC Davis Winery on the campus in Davis, small lots of wine have been made from a group of the individual selections. The evaluation of these wines help guide us regarding the wines produced from the old vine selections. We are particularly interested in receiving feedback about how these clean selections can be made more widely available to growers.
