In Italian, “Macchia” means “the spot”. In the Lodi area, Macchia Winery has been earning a reputation as a spot where discriminating vino buffs can find small lots of high-quality vintages — at some very reasonable prices.
The family-owned and operated winery started in the Lodi Appellation in 2001. Winemaking technology has improved dramatically in the last two decades, but it is still the quality of the fruit that will ultimately determine how good their wine truly is. They are passionate about their vineyards, “Remember, it’s all about the grape!” Well aware of the potential for quality in these old-vine vineyards, long ignored by many winemakers outside of the Lodi area, they make a variety of different Zinfandels, each sporting their own distinctive qualities. In addition, they offer such favorite Italian varietals as Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and Barbera.
Jonathan McMahan is a second-generation winemaker at Macchia. Starting in 2002, he learned early on the importance of this hands-on approach, working with the vineyards and the growers, and showcasing the grapes first and foremost. Over the years, he has collaborated with the some of the most renowned winemakers and growers here in Lodi. He and his team continue the Macchia tradition of wines: “we won’t make it if it isn’t good!” After taking over the winemaking team in 2017, he was awarded “Best Winemaker” and “Back Room Gold” at the El Dorado County fair, and his Primitivo “Meticulous” took Best in State for the California State Fair.
Despite the long hours and hard work that comes along with the romance of the wine business, they say the venture remains a labor of love – and many enthusiasts say it shows in the wine.
