A Splash of Modern in Old Amador
A visit here is to venture into the best of the old and the new of the Sierra Foothills wine scene. Founded in 2010 by Andy Friedlander and Janis Akuna, the Andis winery is a modern state of the art “green” designed winery with a focus not only on Amador old vines Zinfandel but includes a repertoire of wines that are helping to build the region’s modern movement toward varietal diversity and next level quality. In the relatively short time of Andis’ existence, the winery has amassed a slew of accolades, lofty scores, and an enthusiastic following. A line of varietal and vineyard blends are produced under the alternate label, Painted Fields.
After fifty years of establishing and operating a Hawaiian commercial real estate company, Friedlander started planning the next phase of his life where he could pursue his love for the Amador wine country and its wines.
He is now the driving force behind Andis Wines, having built the winery and surrounded himself with a talented team of wine heavyweights. On the production side, no less, are Founding Consulting Winemaker, Phillipe Melka; Director of Winemaking, Maayan Koschitzky; and Estate Winemaker, Mark Fowler who brings to the table his expertise in Sierra Foothills vineyards. Wife and Co-Founder Janis Akuna, whose background is as a financial planning and business professional is involved in the day to day operations of the winery, including hospitality, and is pursuing wine studies through U.C. Davis
Andis’ line of Zinfandels include the Di Stasio Vineyard, the Estate Friedlander Block, and a special bottling of the Original Grandpère Vineyard, considered to be the oldest of all California Zinfandel vineyards. A Sierra Foothills Zinfandel is produced under the winery’s Painted Fields label.
A visit to the winery, which is open daily for tasting and sales, requires an advance reservation that can be arranged through the Andis website.
